We leave Nador, the Rif's Berber city, to head inland, to the so-called Middle Atlas.
We do it following an old mountain track, it will be a day of contrasts, we leave the Mediterranean to ascend to almost 1700m. and the city of Ifran.
Ifran has a surprising Central European architecture, in fact, it is known as the Moroccan Switzerland, and it is the preferred destination for Moroccan families to practice winter sports such as skiing.
Another curiosity is the emblem of the town, a lion, a sculpture dedicated to the same may be found in the center: this lion of the Atlas, now extinct in the wild, was once an endemic animal in these mountains.

We will wake up in Ifran, hopefully in the snow, to resume our route driving between another of the most surprising landscapes of Morocco: the cedar forests of Azrou, a spectacular wooded area that, once again, will remind us of Central European forests.
This forest, of ancient specimens, will bring us an added attraction as it is home to an important population of Barbary macaques or Macaca sylvanus. This species is very sociable, curious and can be easily seen.
After saying goodbye to the cedar forests, we will begin to descend towards Midelt.
Before reaching the city, nestled in a gorge, there are some old abandoned mines. The landscape looks like a movie set in a truly spectacular setting.
This will be our welcome to Midelt.

Midelt is a mountain town, situated on a plain between the Middle and High Atlas. It is a kind of commercial center for the entire inland agricultural area of Drâa-Tafilalet and is well known for its apple production.
It will be our last contact with the mountains, because from there on we will begin our descent until we reach the desert.
This will be a day of contrasts, both for the landscape and the climate, as well as for the terrain and driving. We can enjoy driving through one of the legendary Rallye du Maroc routes.
The sand will welcome us to the desert and allow us to enjoy some fast dirt tracks that will lead us all the way to Merzouga, at the edge of Erg Chebbi dunes. Just in time to enjoy the spectacle of the starry sky over the desert.

We will wake up beside Erg Chebbi, with some of the highest dunes in Morocco, where we will spend the whole day.
After a short technical explanation on driving on sand and on how to tackle the dunes we will put our skills into practice crossing a succession of huge dunes. This will be a day of vertiginous ascents and descents, of sand and more sand, and perhaps a bit of shovelling...
In the late afternoon, we can watch the sunset over the desert.

We start the day taking what was one of the most beautiful tracks of the “Dakar Rally” in Morocco, it is about 250 km of varied terrain (sand, stone, fes fes ...) and very fun driving.
The desert here is omnipresent, just a few rivers and lakes (dry most of the year) and a few small towns, located next to oases, dot the predominantly sandy landscape.
It is one of the most arid, rugged and least inhabited areas in the country.
After another good dose of strings of dunes and rivers of sand, we will end our day in Zagora.

We wake up in Zagora, famous as the city from which the old camel caravans left for Tombouctou (and which took 52 days to cross the desert) and for its immense green palm grove in the Drâa river basin.
This will be our southernmost destination, from here we make our way north, enjoying fast dirt tracks that lead us to the oasis of Marech, the lost city and Gara Medouar, a rock formation known as the Portuguese prison (It was a former 19th century slave market), now famous as the backdrop for the movie The Mummy.
And from one palm grove to another, in this case that of Erfoud, an oasis city located in the Ziz Valley in the Drâa Tafilatet region, famous for its spectacular palm grove, its dates and fossils.

We now say goodbye to Erfoud, and its exuberant palm grove, (we won't find anything similar for the rest of the way), and we start out on the way back home.
This will be a long day, driving over 600km. from the gates of the desert all the way to the Mediterranean, again a day of contrasts in which we must say our goodbyes and, exhausted but satisfied, empty the last sand out of our shoes …
Free day until our return ferry.
