1000 KASBAHS
Imagine driving between the most famous gorges in Morocco, walls of more than 200 meters of vertical rock, dotted with Berber villages carved out of stone.
Bordering palm groves and ascending valleys crowned by centuries-old fortress cities, crossing rivers of sand to reach the spectacular Ait Ben Haddou, reaching the very edge of Erg Chebbi dunes, enjoying what will probably be the most fascinating image of the trip: the starry desert sky… and as a contrast to the silence of the journey, getting lost in the bustling Jemaa El Fna square. Packing in more emotions just isn’t possible.

We leave the tranquility of Boulemane Dadès to once more enjoy driving through the spectacular Dadès gorge, from which we branch off and take a detour to reach Agoudal by dirt track.
To accomplish this we must cross the famous Todra Gorges, with their impressive 200m. plus vertical rock faces where the sun barely creeps in and illuminates the ground for a few minutes a day before heading south towards much more open terrain.
The sand will soon appear to welcome us into the desert and we can enjoy some fast dirt tracks that will lead us to Merzouga, abutting the Erg Chebbi dunes. Just in time to enjoy a spectacular sunset and the stars coming out over the desert.

We will start the day crossing Erg Chebbi dunes to connect with one of the most beautiful tracks of the “Dakar Rally” in Morocco; about 250 km of varied terrain that will put our driving skills fully to the test on sand and dirt.
The desert here is omnipresent, just a few rivers and lakes (dry most of the year) and a few small towns located next to oases dot the predominantly sandy landscape.
Next stop is Zagora, famous for being the city from which the old camel caravans left for Tombouctou (and which took 52 days to cross the desert) and for its immense green palm grove in the Drâa river basin.

After leaving Zagora we head even further south, along the Jbel Tadrart mountain range. On the way, we will pass through Tagounite towards M'hamid, very close to the Algerian border.
We then continue by dirt track towards the Sacred Oasis and the dunes of Erg Cheggaga, from where we will drive once more through a seemingly endless sea of sand until we get to a fantastic sandy track leading to Lake Iriki.
Iriki National Park, covering 123,000 hectares, offers protection to a multitude of desert species during its brief wet periods, especially birds, but also gazelles, oryx and hyenas.
We will finish our day in Foum Zguid, a town created next to a Moroccan military post, crossroads, caravan crossing and stage of the old Paris Dakar rally.
